Southend-on-Sea, commonly referred to simply as Southend, is a large coastal town and unitary authority area with borough status in southeastern Essex, England. It lies on the north side of the Thames Estuary, 40 miles (64 km) east of central London. It is bordered to the north by Rochford and to the west by Castle Point. London Southend Airport is located  1.7 miles north of the town centre.

Southend is home to the longest leisure pier in the world, Southend Pier. An amusement park Adventure Island, formerly known as Peter Pan’s Playground, straddles the pier entrance.
